Governor Cuomo Announces Final Patient Discharged From COVID Overflow Center at South Beach Psychiatric Center on Staten Island

South Beach Psychiatric Center Has Been Utilized As A COVID-19 Hospitalization Overflow on Staten Island Since April 2020

Facility Will No Longer Serve As A COVID-19 Overflow Center Following the Decline of Hospitalizations in New York City

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that South Beach Psychiatric Center, a new but unopened Office of Mental Health facility on Staten Island, discharged their final COVID-19 patient. The facility has served as an emergency hospital since last April, providing care for over 1,000 patients over two waves - second only to the Javits Center. The Center will be closing their overflow center today following the decline in COVID hospitalizations.

"New Yorkers have been brave and diligent in the fight against COVID and it is because of their hard work that we are able to close the South Beach Psychiatric Center's COVID field hospital," Governor Cuomo said. "I want to thank the doctors, nurses and facility staff who were on the front lines, putting themselves and their families at risk, to care for their neighbors and community. The best way to show our appreciation for their service is to get vaccinated and continue to do the things that have allowed us to get to this point, including wearing a mask and following the safety measures that help prevent new infections. We have come a long way and must remain New York tough."

The overflow center first opened on April 7, 2020 and suspended operations on May 21, 2020, treating 217 COVID patients. The Center once again opened its doors to patients on November 24, 2020 and closes April 21, 2021, after treating 805 COVID patients. The South Beach Psychiatric Center was the only field hospital activated during the second wave in New York State and was the first dedicated COVID field hospital to open in the United States.
