Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there have been severe blood shortages in New York and throughout the country over concerns it might not be safe to go to blood donation centers. Giving blood is safe. Blood donation centers have implemented precautions to minimize density and ensure the safety of donors and staff, including requiring donors to make an appointment.
NYS is also helping the Red Cross find larger spaces for blood drives that meet social distancing protocols. Governor Cuomo is strongly encouraging eligible and healthy New Yorkers to make an appointment to donate blood.
Anyone who is healthy, free of COVID-19 symptoms and is at least 16 years old is encouraged to donate blood.
Anyone who: has been diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19; lives with, or had close contact with, individuals diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19; or has traveled to a country with a CDC Level 3 Travel Health Notice for COVID-19.
Blood donation remains a vital service and is excluded from any "stay at home" restrictions during the coronavirus outbreak.
